Until now, forced detentions have been used against suspected political dissidents and human rights defenders, such as Caster’s former colleague, lawyer Wang Quanzhang, who went missing in 2015 and has not been seen since. “Many of them were subject to one form of torture or another, from prolonged sleep deprivation to physical pain, beatings, stress positions, mental abuse and threatening family members.” In many cases, the outcome is forced confessions. “In practice it often means someone is held in secret and denied all contact with the outside world,” says Michael Caster, a human rights advocate and editor of The Peoples Republic of the Disappeared, a collection of first-hand accounts of victims of such forced detentions. It is essentially a legalistic euphemism for disappearance and forced detention. According to reports, Fan was detained at a “holiday resort” in Wuxi, under a 2013 legal framework known as “residential surveillance at a designated location”. More than the regulatory crackdown, it is the nature of Fan’s disappearance that has sent a jolt through Chinese society. The authorities have warned that others will face penalties and “administrative punishment” like Fan if they do not “undergo self-examination and make remedial payments to taxation authorities” before the end of the year.įan Bingbing in March, promoting her eyewear range in Shanghai. Then, last month, a Beijing university published the Film and Television Star Social Responsibility Report, ranking the 100 top celebrities. He denied any involvement, but still publicly apologised for his “indiscretion in wealth management”. The same month, Huang was linked to a scandal involving share-price manipulation and questioned by the authorities. In August, nine major production companies issued a joint pledge to cap actors’ salaries at 40% of total production costs, and lead actors’ salaries at 70% of the cast’s total pay. Then, in June, official agencies announced a joint clampdown on actors’ pay, citing not only tax evasion but “money worship”, “the youth blindly chasing celebrities” and “distorted social values”. Already the content of Chinese films is carefully vetted and must promote “core socialist values”. The event, which was livestreamed on the internet, was like a royal wedding, with a comparable budget – an estimated $31m (£24m). Three years ago, for example, the nation was gripped by the wedding of high-profile actor Huang Xiaoming to Hong Kong-born Yang Ying – AKA Angelababy, who is often considered China’s answer to Kim Kardashian (Kim has 118 million followers on Instagram Angelababy has 96 million followers on Weibo). This cultural explosion has brought in a new breed of moneyed celebrity, some of whom have no inhibitions about its wealth. It is poised to overtake the US as the world’s biggest film territory. She has not been charged with any crime.įan’s first public communication since July was a grovelling confession on Weibo: “For a long time, I did not distinguish between national, social and personal interests,” she wrote. This Wednesday, the mystery was apparently partly explained with the news that Fan and her companies had been ordered to pay 883m yuan (£112m) in unpaid taxes and fines. Fan denied the allegation, and Cui promptly retracted it, but the authorities reportedly began to investigate shortly before Fan went off the radar. The smaller figure, it was implied, was declared to the tax office the larger one purported to indicate what the star was actually paid. The implication presumably was that this was a “yin-yang contract” – two for the same job. One contract was apparently for 10m yuan (£1.3m) the other for 60m yuan (£7.6m). Shortly before her disappearance, the popular TV presenter Cui Yongyuan posted on social media what appeared to be two separate contracts for Fan’s work on her forthcoming movie Air Strike, starring Bruce Willis. The most credible rumour may have been that Fan was in trouble with the tax office, which is not quite as prosaic as it sounds. Wendy responded in verse herself, saying: “You chose to remember me 40 years ago. Wendy was upset by a letter he sent from jail in which he addressed victims with the line ‘perhaps you think you are pretty, still some perfumed sultry wench,’ and later branding them ‘worms.’ The letter was sent to the Australian entertainer's friend. He had hoped to publish and release the track. Harris went on to write a song in prison in which he accused his victims of trying to cash in on the events. My sister got off lightly in comparison." What he did to his daughter’s friend, it was shocking beyond belief. He said: “What I listened to from the judge in his summing up, the level of detail of what Harris had done and how he had done it - it will stay with me for the rest of my life. Wendy threw away the autographed paper after the assault, after she was left traumatised by the groping. The former CCTV operator said he felt “guilt” for not being able to protect her, as he was elsewhere in the building when the assault took place. She had done her job and prompted others to come forward, and I was really proud of her. “A technicality does not change the facts of what he did to her. "She was so stoic and she was just happy he was in jail,” Paul said. The witness was the only person to corroborate her story. The Court of Appeal overturned the conviction against Wendy in 2017, because the credibility of a witness was called into question. They included mum-of-five Wendy, two girls in their early teens and abuse against his daughter’s friend which took place over 16 years. The city’s outdoor tornado sirens went on at 5:11, but tornado sirens can only run for three minutes before they must cycle off to cool down. NOAA Weather Radios in the area received two tornado warnings as the western sky grew ominously black. The NWS then issued a second tornado warning eight minutes later, at 5:17, for what would become the Joplin tornado. The National Weather Service in Springfield, Missouri had issued a tornado warning at 5:09 for a storm on the northern edge of Joplin. In all, about 30% of the city was wrecked. 7,500 homes were damaged, 4,000 of them totally destroyed. A bizarre collision of thunderstorms added incredible energy into the air and the resulting twister spent the next 17 minutes tracking due east across the southern third of Joplin. went from a tiny rope-like funnel to a massive “wedge” in less than 30 seconds. The tornado that dropped down on the west edge of Joplin at 5:36 P.M. Why? Because if you are caught in a violent tornado, only a designated storm shelter or basement will offer you the protection you need to survive. Although these “worst case” tornadoes are rare (some years we don’t have a single EF-5), they are responsible for the most deaths. Although the Fujita tornado intensity scale did not exist in the 1950’s, we know from damage reports the Flint tornado was, like Joplin, an EF-5 tornado, with winds of more than 200 mph. Prior to Joplin, the last tornado to kill more than 100 people occurred in Flint, Michigan in 1953. It took $3 billion to repair and replace everything the twister destroyed. Besides being the deadliest tornado of the past fifty years, it was also the costliest tornado in U.S. Saturday, marks the 10 year anniversary of the Joplin, Missouri EF-5 tornado. The corny music videos of Taylor swift and Salena Gomez playing the 45 minutes we were there set a weird ambience to a Mexican restaurant. My favorite place to stop when I'm in town. I personally will not go back because of the rudeness off every staff working that ignored anything we tried to say. Our friends are regulars here and will not be back because of this really bad experience. We went to the front to pay and the lady there said sorry and did not want to listen to us. The waitress dropped off the bill and ran away. Little to no taste at all besides grease. The other food that was ordered was really bland. She took the taco salad back and brought another one right away. Had to wait another ten minutes before the waitress showed up in the room. My wife and our friend ordered a taco salad and one of them came out burnt to a crisp. Food was brought out after about 15 minutes. because everyone else knew what they wanted. Waitress came back right away and asked what we wanted to order. We were sat right away and got a drink delivered. The newly constructed building allows ample space to continue their mission of helping student organizations and the community. Exterior finishes are a combination of cultured stone with hardie panels and siding. My wife and I came to lacrosse to see some friends and was suggested we try tequila. The Good Steward Resale Shop is a new 10,307 square foot building. I am glad to see the improvements as the owner has always been very welcoming to us. Rice and beans were about the same as always. My wife got the Chef's Special which she really enjoyed and had plenty to take home. Also the condiments included with Fajitas now have shredded cheese which is nice. The amount of chicken and beef was more than in the past. Tonight I got the Fajitas Jalisco and the flavor was very good. It's hard to stop eating them so I have room for my dinner. The chips and salsa were fresh and tasty. The food the last two times has been very good. But so do other restaurants with similar food. As this is in the college area it tends to get busy and can be noisy. The staff are always friendly and welcoming. But we have started going back recently since the owner sold the Onalaska location to focus on the La Crosse. We were frequent customers of Tequila's but had found the food quality had diminished so we had stopped going there as there was another alternative.

It is amazing that this book was written in 1976 and feels just as fresh and timely in 2016. I know this is one book that will stay with me for a long time.īlog | Facebook | Twitter | Instagram | Youtube | StoreĪfter reading Parable of the Sower, I had to go right out and buy Butler’s most famous novel Kindred. For a novel so obviously fictional, it feels very real and true. Kindred is so good because, not only is it well-written and emotionally effective, but it also manages to be several different important things: complex historical-fiction, intriguing science-fiction, and a memoir of slavery. Butler has written a book that goes deeper than surface level, exploring how people come to accept slavery as the norm and to justify poor treatment of slaves. There are many complex and interesting characters - both slaves and slave owners. What if a modern black woman suddenly found herself transported 150+ years into the past, right into the centre of the antebellum South? The book doesn't shy away from portraying the realities of that (nothing is sugar-coated, be prepared for some upsetting scenes).īut it's also more than a gruesome look at historical racism and violence. It's a really important "what if" book about race. I suppose some modern readers will want to compare this story to Outlander and there are some similarities - a woman trying to survive in the past, lots of blood-soaked history and horror, the harsh realities of being who you are in that time - but not only did this book come first, but it is far more distressing, more tied in with historical truth, and way more about surviving than it is about lusty scenes with a kilted hot dude. Kindred is a fascinating, horrific journey through a dark time in American history, combining eye-opening historical research with time travel. This book may be my first by her, but it won't be my last. Us, the children… I never realized how easily people could be trained to accept slavery.”īutler is an author that constantly pops up on "Best sci-fi" and "Must-Read African American authors" lists and I can finally see why. Her papers are held in the research collection of the Huntington Library. Butler died of a stroke at the age of 58. She also taught writer's workshops, and eventually relocated to Washington state. Her books and short stories drew the favorable attention of the public and awards judges. She soon sold her first stories and by the late 1970s had become sufficiently successful as an author that she was able to pursue writing full-time. She attended community college during the Black Power movement, and while participating in a local writer's workshop was encouraged to attend the Clarion Workshop, which focused on science fiction.
